We are only a mile away from Masonboro Inlet, our gateway to the Atlantic Ocean. As a full-service destination, we take great pleasure in hosting a multitude of special watersports events throughout the year. From weddings and corporate retreats to family reunions and intimate gatherings, we are well-equipped to transform any occasion into a memorable and extraordinary affair. Our dedicated event planning team will work closely with you to tailor every detail according to your vision, ensuring that your event surpasses all expectations. We love to work together and support each other. For example, every Saturday morning, you can find complimentary Sunday’s coffee at our gazebo! South End Surf Shop frequently sends customers our way, and we do the same for them. We also partner with local fitness studios such as E-Motion and Longwave Yoga to host outdoor workouts on our lawn and paddleboards. It is truly the people and local businesses of WB that make it such a special place. This collaborative energy extends into the sailing and outdoor adventure community, as well. While the property of the Soundside has many iterations over the years it has always been a mecca for watersports. Its steady winds and proximity to Masonboro Inlet and the Atlanctic Oceans make it the ultimate location. Over the last several years Soundside the culture has been created by a culmination of Bill Baggetts vision for the Blockade Runner Beach Resort and Matty Roberts the current owner. Their friendship and experiences over the last decade has allowed this version of Soundside to come to fruition. We offer a unique experience that combines the charm of a beachside oasis with the thrill of watersports and exploration and continue to be dedicated to providing access to the local community.. ASA 101 Certification- Basic Keelboat Sailing in Wrightsville Beach, NC!

About

ASA 101 basic keelboat sailing is the first step in the ASA sailing progression. The course is family-friendly and welcomes all ages over 13, with no previous boating experience required. The course is completed over two full days (9am- 5pm) and covers basic skills such as preparation of the boat, hoisting sails, rules of the road, points of sail, man overboard drill, heaving to and much more. Hands-on training includes open water sailing, docking, anchoring, etc. Upon graduation, you will receive ASA certification, and you will be ready to safely and confidently skipper boats of 20 ft. On completion of your certificate, you can rent the J/22 on your own to further develop your skills and confidence.

Under the guidance of experienced instructors, you’ll learn the foundations of sailing, from sail trim and boat handling to navigation and safety procedures. Through hands-on practical training and classroom sessions, you’ll gain a deep understanding of wind dynamics, points of sail, and maneuvering techniques. This course is perfect for beginners or those with minimal sailing experience, as it lays the groundwork for a lifetime of sailing adventures.

I had adventure sailing and U.S. Sailing certified with soundside. I want to give a 5-star because I had great experiences with both of them. They have excellent instructors who are super experienced with sailing. I kept so many key notes from learning from them which you probably won't learn from the textbook, or at least not from just reading one book. At first I thought "Oh it is just physics and how hard can it be?" but it is not that simple! There are so many "fine-tune" and knowledge from experiences you need to learn and the instructors are offering a very high density of knowledge to you so make sure you take notes. We went to the ocean which was just super awesome! We saw playful dolphins too. Overall I think they are a cool crew and they are chill people but also professional. Capt Matty and Amy are professional, knowledgeable and fun! We took the sunset cruise (twice this month) and absolutely had an amazing time on both sails. The boat is beautiful and clean. It has a bathroom! The tunes were whatever we wanted them to be and while we brought our own beverages, there were plenty on board! It was great to learn about all things Wrightsville Beach and surrounding small islands throughout the sail. The dock is located on a beautiful patch of beach with gorgeous white chairs. We stayed at the Cottage at the Blockade runner and were on the sound with the folks at the Sailing School every day - renting kayaks, doing the Island Hopper Cruise, etc. They were amazing. Friendly, helpful, and just amazing. Totally LOVED the Island Hopper Cruise. We had kids and grandmas, and everything in between. The history was really interesting, we could take our time exploring, and lots of cool wildlife, including fiddler crabs, and dolphins! I would do it again, and highly recommend it for families. It's a great way to spend a few hours off the beach, but still on the water.

We had such a great time on our first family vacation to Wrightsville Beach, we have already booked accommodations for next summer! One of the main highlights of our weeklong stay was Sound Side at the Blockade Runner. This conveniently located and wonderful establishment runs separately from the Blockade Runner. The owner, Camryn (sp?), offers so many activities from morning until evening. The ease and ability to get out on the water and explore are phenomenal. Our family enjoyed Sound Side activities for at least 5 out of the 7 days of our stay. Although my personal favorite was renting kayaks, which we did at all different times of the day, 12 of our 17 members enjoyed an adventurous afternoon excursion on the Carolina Runner with Captain Camryn (sp?). Family members from ages 8 to 78 were all able to participate in this activity together, with some of the youngers even helping Captain navigate the boat. They had so much fun my 9 year old nephew was convinced he wanted to get a boat and go out every day. Captain and his team, especially Madison and Phoebe, are so accommodating of everyone, from fishing to kayaking to sailing and cruising excursions and SUPS. There are Adirondack chairs and a nice sandy beach on the sound for those who wish to be landlubbers and hang out while waiting for the more aquatically inclined adventurers. And always fun and relaxing beach music to top it off. Truly a highlight of our vaca!! I can't speak highly enough of this establishment. More importantly, why are you still reading this....go get out on the water at Sound Side!!

Cam is a great teacher. ASA101 is not what I'd call an Easy A, all four in our class had to work hard on our skills on the boat and in preparation for the written exam, but we all passed. Everyone made plenty of mistakes out there on the water. Cam was patient, coached everyone through the moves until we got them down. I really appreciate that Captain Cam hung in there almost 90 minutes past the end of class on the second day until we could all finish on the water. The winds were low so the moves all took longer to execute. There was no "good enough, I'm done for the day." Very professional.

We booked and experienced two adventures: one a one-hour morning sailing lesson on a Hobie Cat, the other a kayaking eco-tour that wound up being two hours long.They were both wonderful and I can't say enough about our instructors. I'm pretty incompetent at such things and have zero sailing experience (not even as a passenger), so I wasn't even sure I'd be able to do the Hobie thing successfully. But our instructor made it easy for both me and my kid. It really felt great going around the sound using the wind and our own hands. For me, it might have been the highlight of our trip.The kayaking tour was also terrific -- though a lot more arduous, obviously, paddling for two hours. We paddled across the sound through some marshes, and our guide pointed out birds and natural features as well as aspects of the landscape. We went through the intercoastal waterway and then stopped at a little sandbar on the way back to see some sea squirters. Again our guide was knowledgeable and personable.

I took ASA sailing 101 with Capt Camryn, he is an amazing instructor, and we all had a wonderful time. The size of the class was four (max size) and we learned a lot through his excellent instruction and never felt like the class was too large to learn The boat was in excellent shape and outfitted very well. The seating area of the swift J boats will hurt your bum after time, but like Camryn says, if you’re too comfortable you aren’t paying attention when you should. I can’t wait to learn more about sailing and come back and take 103. The course was the cheapest around and does not require a stay at the Blockade Runner Resort. However, it is a great and convenient place to stay and they have excellent food and service. Highly recommend learning to sail here.

Excellent ASA School. I took the ASA101 class with the Blockade Runner Sailing School. I had no prior sailing experience. Our two day class was thought by two experienced instructors, Pete and Camryn. We spent most of the two day class on the water. However, the instructors also spent enough time to emphasize the physics of sailing, rules and regulations in the classroom for me to pass the certification test. The instructors shared a lot of personal experiences on dos and don’ts in sailing, the way you tie knots, put away your lines, etc which I appreciate. I’m going back in a few weeks to rent boats from them and practice my sailing skills. The overall experience with Blockade Runner, director of the sailing Captain Matty, and instructors was excellent. I definitely plan to take my ASA 103 with Blockade Runner in the fall.

I can’t say enough good things - go sail with Blockade Runner. They are flexible with schedules, well priced, and Captain Camryn and Captain Matty are the best around - trust me you will be in good hands. We are lucky to live in the area but would have happily traveled in to sail with them. They make sailing welcoming and accessible to all walks of life and so fun. Had Capt Cameron for two days with my son for the ASA 101 course. The course and the instructor were fantastic. It is worth the money and my son and I feel that we are ready to start sailing. Had a great time kayaking and SUP-ing across the sound with a very professional crew and top notch equipment. Love the convenient location right across from the Blockade Runner. The private beach area for calm swimming on the sound was a nice surprise. Beautiful spot to watch the sunset over the sound. We also took the Masonboro island boat trip for a few hours and loved it. Very easy walk across the dunes to the near empty beach. So private and peaceful. Great views of the area and fun watching kite surfers on the water. Kids had a blast. Bring shade and hats and be prepared to pack in and pack out all food and trash responsibly. Great fun. Nice captain and crew.
